Moloka’i
This richly imagined novel, set in Hawai’i more than a century ago, is an extraordinary epic of a little-known time and place—and a deeply moving testament to the resiliency of the human spirit.
Rachel Kalama, a spirited seven-year-old Hawaiian girl, dreams of visiting far-off lands like her father, a merchant seaman. Then one day a rose-colored mark appears on her skin, and those dreams are stolen from her. Taken from her home and family, Rachel is sent to Kalaupapa, the quarantined leprosy settlement on the island of Moloka’i. Here her life is supposed to end—but instead she discovers it is only just beginning.
With a vibrant cast of vividly realized characters, Moloka’i is the true-to-life chronicle of a people who embraced life in the face of death. Such is the warmth, humor, and compassion of this novel that “few readers will remain unchanged by Rachel’s story” (mostlyfiction.com).

Resolved Question: I planning advice for a huge vacation.?
I’m in college right now and in 3 years i plan to graduate and go on a 2 month vacation before i start my career (engineering). I want to go to europe for a about a month, and for the other, a mix of Hawaii and a good U.S. national park. How would you suggest i plan. Europe: Should i book hotel stays in advance of the travel route i choose. or just stay as i go, and travel as i please. I mean i will have a month in europe to explore and i don’t want to feel tied down to a routine. Is either choice going to save me money. I plan to buy a train pass once i’m there. As far as a national park goes i plan to camp. and do whatever i want. But for Hawaii, is it best to just book on my own or are travel agents a good help? I am an inexperienced traveler and want this trip to be fun and well planned so i don’t run into many problems. ANY ADVICE ON PLANNING TIPS??

Resolved Question: Child traveling without parents?
My 14 yr old daughter will be traveling to Hawaii with a family friend. I am aware that I will need to provide a notarized letter of consent for travle along with her birth certificate and insurance card or copy of card. My question are: 1. Do I need to provide the original birth certificate? 2. What wording do I use for the notarized letter? 3. Do I need 1 notarized letter or 2 of them? One for travel and the other for medical treatment? Thanks so much.
Resolved Question: What other documents can be used as an ID when traveling to Hawaii? School ID?
The reason am I asking is because a friend who only has a passport from a different country with no visa wants to go there. He had a visa but since he got a replacement passport after losing the original he has no visa on the current passport. Would that be concern? How many ID’s should anyone bring when going there?

Just looking to see if there are others like that. I asked her where she got it, she said her friend booked it for her and she already went back to russia. So, no luck for me. Just like everyone I dont make a lot of money and would like to travel for cheap and still have a great time. I do know some people there but not that close to them. Thanks for all your help

Voting Question: Wildlife or Agronomy? which sounds better?
Hey all- I’ve been narrowing down my major choices and I think wildlife and agronomy sound the most interesting to me. In case you didn’t know, agronomy is a branch of plant science that deals with field crops. I must truly say that wildlife is my first love, but i’m not sure if it fits as well into the jigsaw puzzle of the rest of my life. I want to travel and be able to have a good job with good pay and job security- it seems like agronomy is just that. I mean, everyone’s gotta eat and develop new plants to feed the world! I was looking on a job website for it too, and jobs studying sugarcane in Hawaii and Jamaica seemed almost plentiful. And of course I could always come back to study corn back in the boonies. However, I feel really strongly about wildlife and I want to help them, and I love animals a lot. It’s saddening though knowing the jobs are pretty much not there. What’s a guy to do? Do i go for my first love, or something cool that’s also practical? Thanks for the help!
