The Ganges
India is not a place, it is an experience. And the Ganges is not a river, it is an aspect of the divine. Born and brought up in Rajasthan, Raghubir Singh felt the spell of the river, its destructive power, and its majesty. Although he lived for many years in the West, he returned to the river again and again. He saw its contradictions as part of a process of growth and change: naked sadhus and ancient rituals alongside electric crematoria and modern ports.
This book brings to life Raghubir Singh’s personal pilgrimage along the Ganges, from the Himalayas, where the river rises among snows, through the villages of the Gangetic Plain, past Banaras and through Bihar, to the Bay of Bengal between India and Bangladesh. On the journey he captured the essence of the river’s many different stages and moods, its strange and stunning beauty, its ferocity during the monsoon, the intimate daily lives of the people who live along it, and its powerful religious significance, attested by the millions of Hindus who take part in the ageless pilgrimages and festivals along its banks. 123 color photographs.

Video highlights of my tour around Northern India. In January 2008 I went to India to attend my friend Raghav’s traditional Indian wedding. I then joined Intrepid Travels “Slowly down the Ganges” tour which took me to all the major sites of Northern India and Rajasthan. Some of the places I visited on the tour included Jama Masjid Mosque, A Sikh Temple, Connaught Place, Karol Bagh and the Red fort in Delhi. Mizapur before boarding our boats and sailing three days down the river Ganges camping on its banks at night. We spent a further three days in in the holy city of Varanasi watching all the religious ceremonies on the banks before getting an overnight train to Agra were we saw the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort as well as a carpet factory. In Jaipur we visited the observatory, Wind Palace and City Palace as well as the Amber Fort and Water Palace and a charity organisation called Ladli that looks after homeless children. We then took a bus and jeep ride to get to Roopangarh Fort were we lived like Maharajas for a night. We then went to Pushkar were we went on a two day camel safari into the desert as well as getting blessed at the holy lake. Ganges River - Cremation![]()
People travel from distant places to immerse the ashes of their kin in the waters of the Ganga; this immersion also is believed to send the ashes to heaven. Several places sacred to Hindus lie along the banks of the river Ganga, including Haridwar and Kashi. People carry sacred water from the Ganges that is sealed in copper pots after making the pilgrimage to Kashi. It is believed that drinking water from the Ganga with one’s last breath will take the soul to heaven.
The Holy River![]()
The Ganga (Ganges) River is the holiest river in all of India. It is believed by the faithful that bathing in Ganga can cleanse one of sins and if one drinks water from the Ganges, with their dying breath, they will ascend directly to heaven. Sacred River: The Ganges of India
All rivers in India are sacred, and the Ganges most of all. Every year, more than one million Hindu pilgrims journey to Benares to renew themselves in its waters. Caldecott Honor medalist Ted Lewin joined the pilgrims at the river’s edge for an experience he describes as one of the most unforgettable of his life. His luminous watercolors and simple, evocative text brilliantly capture the traditions, beliefs, and colorful pageantry of the devout and their ancient city.
